LDS Scout Leader Training

"It is vital that we... take training seriously. We are part of this great partnership with Boy Scouts of America for very specific reasons: If we fully participate, our young men will be blessed and better prepared for missions and for the blessings of the temple. Part of the participation is training..."
-Pres. Dahlquist, General YM President from 2004-2009

Safety

The First Presidency and the General YM Presidency are really emphasizing safety. Here is a letter from the First Presidency on the subject of safety in scouting. We need to make sure that we are all familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting and create Tour Plans when needed. Here is the BSA's Sweet 16 of Safety.

VOLT

VOLT training is both position specific training and introduction to outdoor leadership skills. The VOLT training will be held at the council level this upcoming year. There will be one council-wide, one-weekend course.

VOLT one-weekend class: Jan 9-11, 2015

University of Scouting

University of Scouting is a great program for each of us to take courses to brush up on particular skills or gain new ideas for how to help our units have a great program. The University of Scouting is a one day training activity somewhat like a merit badge midway, but for adult leaders - Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venture. The next University of Scouting is scheduled for March of 2016.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is the premier leadership training for scout leaders. Its focus is on developing leadership skills rather than scout skills. The next Wood Badge course will be in March of 2015. Pres. Dahlquist, the previous General Young Men's president, said this about wood badge:

"If we are really intent in touching the lives of our young men, in building, as Elder Ballard has challenged, 'the greatest generation of missionaries the world has ever seen,' then we will do whatever is necessary to help us to accomplish that -- including getting trained. For most of us, Wood Badge is life-changing because it has to do more with vision and understanding this great tool for strengthening young men of the Aaronic Priesthood than anything else."

Online Training

Most Cub Scouting, Toop Committee, and Unit Commissioner training, and the initial Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venture leader training is online at myscouting.scouting.org.

All stake and ward Aaronic Priesthood leaders should watch  2013 Young Men Auxiliary Leader Training.

Currently the council does not have leader-specific training for Varsity and Venture leaders. If you are a Varsity or Venture leader you should view the training below and attend the introduction to outdoor leadership skills. It would be very advisable to attend the scoutmaster position specific training as well.

It is important that we train our youth leaders in their responsibilities. This is a link to a syllabus for training youth leaders how to run a troop.

Training Awards for Adults

The training awards and keys are designed to recognize unit Scouters for tenure, training, and performance in their leadership roles. We encourage adults to work on training awards. You'll find that if you are doing your calling you will be fulfilling most if not all of the requirements.
