Getting Started: Camping Gear

Here are some tips I found on the basic gear for getting started camping.

As a beginner camper, the "Big Three" things to worry about are: your pack, your sleeping system, and your shelter.

For big troop drive-up campouts, having a chuck box to hold your troop or patrol kitchen gear is really helpful. Here are some plans.

Later, when you decide to start doing more backpacking style campouts you'll want to start learning about what you should and should take to have a light pack. The YouTube video Ultralight Backpacking for Scout Leaders and Adults is a good intro to thinking about what to pack. The same "Big Three" principles apply, but now you need to start thinking about weight.

When you feel like delving deep into the depths of ultralight backpacking, search "Only the Lightest" on YouTube for 120+ videos on ultralight backpacking. One you have worked on coming up with a lightweight solution for the big three, your next three thing to worry about are your cooking system, your clothes, and your small miscellaneous items.
