HSR Climbing Tower Training

Your HSR Challenge Tower has a training event planned for the weekend of February 19-21.  It will begin at 6pm on February 19th at the Hood Scout Reservation Challenge Tower.  There are a two levels of training. Both levels of training will begin on Friday night.  The Level I training will finish on Saturday around 6pm and it is for leaders who have not ever attended one of the Tower's training events. The Level II training will finish on Sunday afternoon around 3pm.  All meals will be provided.  You must eat before you get there on Friday night. Attendance for all events is required depending on your level of training.

There are currently only 12 people in our council that are trained to operate our tower.  In order to operate the tower one must be trained to a Level II instructor level .  It takes a minimum of 2 trained people to operate the tower.  One instructor is required for every 6 participants.  There are two levels of training:

Level II training takes at least two weekends to complete.  A skills check off and written test must be completed.  The Level II candidate must also operate the Tower under the supervision of a Level II trainer in order to be cleared as a Level II instructor.   Once training is completed, a Level II instructor may operate the tower. It is very important that we get some new instructors this year.  Our Tower has been in operation for 3 years now and some of our original instructors training level will expire this year leaving us possibly short staffed if we don't get some new instructors.  This training level is good for 3 years but annual check offs must be completed and regular participation in the tower activities must be recorded.

Level I training takes one weekend to complete.  A skills check off is required to become a Level I instructor. Once someone completes this training they can ASSIST in operating the tower with the assistance of a Level II instructor. This training level is only good for 1 year but can be extended with regular participation in tower activities.

I'm informing you of this information to let you see how important it is for the Andrew Jackson Council to train more adults and leaders to assist us in running our Challenge Course.  Troops with trained leaders will be given priority in requesting use of the tower.  Trained leaders will also be given a discount on the per scout fees that are charged for use of the tower.  Those that complete the training will also be expected to assist us in operating the tower at council events.  Training is free.

With the addition of our new Zip Line and Swing By Choice, our demand for use of the Tower and trained staff will increase.  Please consider becoming a staff member at the HSR Challenge Tower.

Remember you are required to participate in activities at the tower in order to keep your level of training current.  Participating in this training can keep your training level current or you can advance to the next level.  ALL Level II Instructors will receive a Tower STAFF Tshirt and can purchase a Tower STAFF POLO with your name on it.  Level I Instructors will receive a Tower STAFF Tshirt once they have been active in at least 3 activities at the Tower.  Everyone  who completes this training is expected to participate in at least 2 events each year at the Tower.

Please sign up on the council web site.  Here is the link.

2015 Youth Conference Pictures

What a great youth conference! That was an event never to be forgotten. Bro. Erekson from the Vicksburg Ward took a lot of pictures of the whole event. He has posted them for us. They will only be up for a few months as they take up a lot of space.

Here is what he said:
I have uploaded 318 of the best pictures I took at Youth Conference to a Google Plus Photo Album and also to a Picasaweb album. Feel free to view and download any or all (about 780 MB) of the photos. I will leave the photos up as long as possible, hopefully at least 6 months. However, due to space limitations I will remove them at some point.

Feel free to share the link with any other youth or leaders.

Enjoy!

Little Philmont Training

We have an upcoming Little Philmont conference! This is an exciting event designed to help anyone in any sort of way associated with scouting in the Church be more familiar with the scouting program, why we use it, and how we make it work well for us.

 When is Little Philmont?

February 7th, 2015
7:30am - 3:30pm
Jackson Stake Center in Clinton, MS

How do I register?

What is Little Philmont?

Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico is the site of several premier scout leader training courses every year. Two weeks out of every summer (two sessions, one week each), the Church holds Priesthood Leadership Training at Philmont Scout Ranch, where the General Young Men Presidency and General Primary Presidency train Stake Presidencies in using Scouting in conjunction with the priesthood. Those Stake Presidencies are then encouraged to take what they learn back to their stakes and hold a "Little Philmont" - a one or two day conference about how Scouting fits with the Church and the priesthood. This is done under the direction of the Young Men General Presidency. In fact, I have heard there is often a member of the Young Men General Presidency, as well as members of the Board at the Little Philmont.

Who should attend a Little Philmont?

Everyone! Little Philmont is for anyone with a Scout-related calling, from direct contact leaders to committee members, Cubs through Venturing. It is for Young Men and Primary presidencies on both the stake and ward level. It is for bishoprics and parents of scouts. And, of course, commissioners serving LDS units would find it helpful. It is for anyone who could benefit from a better understanding of how the priesthood and Scouting fit together and why the Lord has asked us to use this program to raise His young men and train them to be missionaries (and beyond).

Lindsey Stirling Live Facebook Event

Participate in a live event Tuesday, November 25 at 6:30 p.m. MST featuring world-famous LDS entertainer Lindsey Sterling. Don’t dress up or buy a ticket. You can participate wherever you are!
Streaming live to the LDS Youth Facebook pageYouTube, or the Mormon Channel, this event will also be hosted in three languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese)!
Lindsey Stirling is a dancing, hip hop violinist, a returned missionary, and a self-made success story. Youth around the world will have a chance to ask Lindsey questions, moderated by Young Men general president David L. Beck and Young Women general president Bonnie L. Oscarson. Elder Beck said of the event, “Elder Bednar has challenged all of us to “share goodness”—to use social media to flood the earth with goodness and truth. This Face to Face event is just one way we are trying to follow that counsel.”

Lindsey will share her own story—including how she learned to recognize her worth, how she shares the gospel, and how she has risen above criticism to make a unique contribution to the world. Lindsey will also perform on her violin.
